Over the past two weeks, students have been doing the following amidst musical practice: In unit of inquiry students have come up with the lines of inquiry and concepts for the unit. They were being tuned into the unit through: artwork, advertisements and short films. They were asked to express their - thoughts, feelings and emotions after watching them. Maths: Students continued to explore different operations with fractional quantities through myimaths, manupulatives and of course computation. In English, students were working in their groups with their respective novels. They were attempting questions from the bingo (stuck in their note books) or were attempting specific questions given to them. Example like the one below:

Formative assessment-3 of the unit civilisation

Unit of inquiry - Media

Central idea :  The media can inform and influence values and opinions of its audience.  Think of some lines of inquiry

English-homework- 17th-November

Also draw the setting you wish to have. - A character whom you want to be like and explain what qualities do you like about the character. Also draw the character. - Scenes which bring out a variety of emotions in you. Draw the scenes and explain what emotion it evoked in you.

Week of 12th-16th November

In unit of inquiry students worked on their summative assessment on the civilisation unit and they reflected on the unit through the question prompts given on the class blog. In Maths fractions was continued. Fraction of quantities and equivalent fractions were re-inforced through lessons on www.myimaths.com and through manipulatives. Stuents attempting to show fractions of different quantities through manipulates below Students attempting to do equivalent fractions with the help of manipulatives: Manipulatives enable students to compute mentally and strengthen their ability to compute mentally. Below are some photographs of students going through lessons and solving online problems on www.myimaths.com: In English students were engaged in literature study. They worked on the bingo given to them.

unit-reflection guidelines-15th-Nov

Unit reflection on Civilisation - Central idea - The good things about the unit - The things which can be improved - Interesting parts of the unit - Which key concept is connected to the unit according to you and why?

Week of 9th-November

Image
In Maths students have started to explore the different types of fractions- proper, improper, like, unlike and mixed fractions. Students tried to explore the commonalities and differences between the different types of fractions with the help of venn diagrams (hoops were used). A discussion with students about - what they would like to do in fractions led to  the following points. This helped me understand what they have an idea of and what they would like to revise.  In English, students worked on their respective novels by choosing a task they wanted to work on. They also reflected on the differences between myths, legends and folk tales. In unit of inquiry, students worked on the 2nd and 3rd formative assessment.

Week of 29th October

Image
Last week in unit of inquiry students brainstormed on the following question: What does a civilisation consist of? Students did a role-play on their research and came up with the following points through their discussion which i took note of: The above was primarily done through reading and research on Indus Valley civilisation. Students located various ancient civilisations on the world map and thereafter located the cordinates of the civilisations on the world map. In Maths students practiced co-ordinates on paper as well as played the game of co-ordinates out-door. In English students understood that fairy-tales can be viewed from the antagonists perspective too. They are writing a script from the antagonist's perspective.

Homework- 2nd-November

unit of inquiry: Research on the following question/s:- - What do you think we have learnt from the past civilisations?   You may consider the following areas while do your research:- - Have we developed any food habits from them? - Have we gotten inspired by their clothes, jewelry or fashion? - Have we gotten inspired by their rituals or traditions? - Have we gotten inspired by their society, their rules, regulations, lifestyle? - Have we gotten inspired by their art and architecture? You may do the above in your unit of inquiry note book and please quote the sources.

week 22nd-October - 26th-October

In English, literature study began. Students reflected on the cover page and started writing their stories. Students also looked at reviewing a book and what are the approaches towards reviewing a book. In unit of inquiry students had researched on Indus Valley civilisation and they reflected on the characteristics of Indus Valley Civilisation. In Maths students revised basic operations, factors and multiples. A new topic- co-ordinates was introduced last week. Students plotted the points on the four quadrants. In addition to the above, on Saturday there was the Maths Mela and below are some snapshots of the same: A big thanks to Ms Zoya Fatima for emailing the photographs to me.

week-1st October - 5th October

Image
This week students were assessed in Maths (place-value, expansion and rounding), English (creative writing), unit of inquiry (first line of inquiry of the unit on civilisation). Apart from the above, students practised factors and multiples through manupulativs and rounding of numbers. Below are some photographs of the same: As it can be seen in the photograph below, students were thoroughly engaged in this activity as they were able to explore in various different ways and explain it to their peers. In unit of inquiry students read the assigned pages through gig-saw reading and created a mind-map of their understanding on archaeology. They followed it up with a gallery walk in order to understand each other's observation and knowledge about archaeology and archaeologists. Below are some photographs of the same. There are some videos shared by Ms Sushmita in regard to the Hindi activities in class: https://youtu.be/OaRDoLy2oyA https://youtu.b

18th September - 28th September contd. (unit of inquiry and English)

Image
In English students were given pictures and they had to make a story using adjectives, nouns and words which convey emotions. Apart from the above students were involved in guided reading during their English class. ................................................................................................................................................................. In unit of inquiry students wrote the reflection of their last unit on buildings and structures. They inquired into the concept of archaeology by being archaeologists themselves. They had to dig out certain artefacts and think about them through the given questions example: - What do you think this might be? - How do you think it might have been used? - What material do you think is it made of? etc. Below are a few photographs of students in action:
